What is a Smog Check?
A smog check is an emissions inspection that ensures your vehicle meets California’s air quality standards. It's required during registration renewal or title transfer, and checks pollutants from your exhaust system, engine, and onboard computer.
When Do You Need a Smog Check?
- When renewing your vehicle registration (typically every 2 years)
- When buying or selling a used vehicle
- If your vehicle is flagged for a test-only station
- If you've recently repaired emissions components
When Do You Need a Smog Check?
- You’re renewing your registration for a gas vehicle over 4 years old
- You're transferring ownership of a used vehicle
- Your vehicle was flagged by the DMV for emissions testing
- Your registration renewal notice says “Smog Certification Required”
- You’re registering a vehicle from out of state in California
A STAR station is certified by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair to perform state-directed smog checks.
You’ll need a STAR smog if:
• The DMV specifically requests one
